Masthead Fonts.

In my masthead typography I want to emulate the old school, Riot Grrrl, Fanzine aesthetic that is part of the iconography of the genre.

These are the sorts of fonts that are commonplace in Riot Grrrl fanzines and are what I wish to replicate. They are all very punk and edgy, I especially like the ransom note aesthetic of the 'Riot Grrrl London' fanzine.

I have collected lots of different fonts which could be seen as Riot Grrrl and are employed by the fanzines above. I have also critiqued each font on the criterion of whether it can be used effectively as a masthead.

These are the five worse fonts in respect to the criterion;

I dislike this font, although the aesthetic is very punk and riotous, the 'R' and the 'i' seem to blend into one letter because of this it is illegible and cannot be use as a masthead.

This scruffy-handwriting sort of typeface is commonplace amongst the fanzines I am using for inspiration. However, the scribbles across it make it extremely hard to read; I shall not be using it as my masthead.

Although I love this particular font, I realise it cannot be used as a masthead. The punk symbols incorporated into the font make it hard to read.

This font is too thin to use as a masthead; it is also dissolving at the edges which means it will be difficult to determine where the font ends and the background begins on a front cover.

Aside from this font being pixelated, it is also not representative of any of the punk typefaces shown in the Riot Grrrl fanzines. Despite it being labeled as a punk font, it is plain and dull.

Out of the twenty-four fonts I produced these five are the best:

This is the best 'ransom note' inspired font I created, a style used by the fanzines I particularly enjoyed. I like how it is distorted and disintegrated in some parts but it is still legible. It is a very Riot Grrrl, punk typeface.

The scruffy-handwriting font is popular within the Fanzine zeitgeist and this one is very easy to read.

This font is very Riot Grrrl, it is distorted and partly disintegrated (especially near the bottom left of the 'R'). It is very punky yet easily legible since is has very bold lettering.

This font is a combination of two of my favourite types of Riot Grrrl typeface. The 'R' takes the 'ransom note' form, yet the rest is a very bold, yet grungy, lettering. The contrast between colours is also aesthetically pleasing.

This font is, again, very bold and easy to read yet Riot Grrrl. The incorporation of the bricks into the typeface makes it very edgy and urban (adjectives synonymous with the Riot Grrrl genre).
